Salary Range: (7680) $49,267.20-$100,651.20

Position Location: Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI) Montgomery, Alabama or Birmingham, Alabama

The Alabama Reading Initiative Section (ARI) of the Alabama State Department of Education intends to fill one (1) Education Specialist I position for Summer and Extended Learning. This K-12 position, supporting summer and extended learning, is housed in the ARI section, however, it encompasses all grades and multiple subject areas.

Duties will include, but will not be limited to the following:

  • Identify strategic partnerships and foster cross collaboration with internal (ARI, AMSTI, OMI, 21st Century, OMI, unique populations, etc.) and external (LEAs, charters, community-based organizations, etc.) stakeholders to meet short and long-term goals for summer and after-school learning programs, as outlined in law, funding requirements, and the mission of the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE).
  • Assist in determining the internal and external goals, benchmarks, budgets, and deliverables for summer and other extended learning initiatives.
  • Create and manage structures for grant opportunities to local education agencies, municipalities, and/or non-profit organizations for afterschool and summer programs.
  • Provide ongoing technical assistance and professional learning for LEAs to build their capacity with summer and after school learning opportunities as well as leveraging partnerships with community-based organizations.
  • Gather and review data regarding summer and after-school learning opportunities to identify gaps impacting students, program needs, resource development needs and highlight promising practices and effective programs for accelerating student learning.
  • Research effective external practices, programs, and policies for summer and after-school learning.
  • Develop a tool to evaluate summer and other extended learning programs in compliance with state/federal regulations so that the tool will support to support coaching, monitoring, compliance, and a continuous improvement process.
  • Develop and facilitate a Summer Learning Advisory Council to create infrastructures that support the effective implementation of quality summer learning action plans.
  • Design and deliver professional learning in face-to-face, virtual, and blended formats to increase efficiency in correspondence, communication, and meeting deadlines so that department and division/section goals are met.
  • Draft/compose/edit documents (response letters, reports, memoranda, policies, procedures, regulations).
  • Research and communicate a deep understanding of state laws that impact summer learning (Alabama Literacy Act and Alabama Numeracy Act)

Education:

Experience:

  • Five years of professional experience in teaching, education administration, or a related assignment
  • Experience combining outside agencies together with school personnel to accomplish goals.
  • Leadership and presentation experience
  • Experience and knowledge of the Alabama Literacy Act and the Alabama Numeracy Act

Other Skills:

  • Strong motivation, organization, and data management skills
  • Ability to work on multiple assignments concurrently, use problem-solving skills to generate solutions, and create and deliver effective presentations to professional audiences
  • Excellent leadership and people/relationship building skills
  • Team-oriented with proven ability to work flexibility with others
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Word, etc.)
  • Knowledge of the Alabama Literacy Act (ALA)
  • Ability to travel overnight
  • Effective communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to inspect big picture goals and support the details involved
