The Educator Certification Section, Montgomery, intends to fill two (2) Education Specialist I positions. The successful candidate will complete criminal history background checks for individuals having unsupervised access to students in Alabama Schools.

Duties will include, but will not be limited to the following:

  • Process criminal history background reviews for individuals seeking certification/licensure/employment for the certification coordinator’s review process so that accurate records are retrieved, disseminated, and managed.
  • Proof and sign letters referencing a candidates’ suitability to teach or work in an unsupervised capacity with children. Documents are made available to the individual and the court.
  • Proof and edit documents which are made available to the certification coordinator for signature, providing employment suitability status of individuals seeking unsupervised work with children.
  • Review updated criminal history records from ALEA.
  • Review reports of alleged misconduct involving certificate and license holders received from Local Education Agencies (LEAs) and other education agencies outside Alabama.
  • Provide consultation to applicants with questions regarding the Alabama State Department of Education’s criminal history background check procedures.
  • Work with various stakeholders to ensure continuity of the agency’s criminal history background check process throughout Alabama.
  • Advise LEA representatives and other individuals on basic background check requirements and review status accurately.
  • Compose emails and other forms of correspondence concerning background review procedures and requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in an approved subject matter or education specialty area
  • Five (5) years of professional experience in teaching, education administration or a related assignment including three (3) years of professional experience in one of the specialty areas listed on the State Personnel job announcement

Experience:

  • Knowledge of Criminal Justice policy/procedures strongly preferred
  • Computer related skills required-Microsoft Office
