Position Title:  Education Specialist I

Position Code: 30122

Salary Range: $49,267.20 – $100,651.20

Position Location: Special Education Services, Montgomery or Birmingham


The Special Education Services (SES) Section of the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) in Montgomery, intends to fill multiple Education Specialist I positions.

Duties will include, but will not be limited to the following:

  • Assist LEAs by providing universal, targeted, and intensive technical assistance related to special education topics.
  • Compose and proofs documents, correspondence, and emails.
  • Respond to requests received from local education agency staff, state agency staff, officials, and the general public by telephone, emails, letters, and visits.
  • Research, compile, and develop documents and manuals that reflect current regulations and practices in special education.
  • Collaborate on projects and initiatives with individuals in the section, department, and/or other agencies.
  • Utilize office software programs in order to increase efficiency in correspondence, communication, and meeting deadlines.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

These positions are based in Montgomery, AL, or Birmingham, AL, and can require extensive travel around the state.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or university in special education (or a field directly related to special education e.g., psychometry, school psychology, or educational leadership).
  • Minimum of five years of professional experience in teaching, education administration, or a related assignment.
  • Minimum of three years of professional experience in special education (or a field directly related to special education e.g., psychometry, school psychology, or educational leadership)

  • Understanding of effective teaching methods.
  • Understanding of policies, laws, and guidelines related to special education including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and individualized education programs (IEPs).
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Extensive professional experience and expertise in one or more of the following areas is highly desired. Applicants should highlight and identify qualifications for any applicable area(s) in the cover letter.

 

  • Special education monitoring and compliance.
  • Coaching, support, and school improvement activities related to the subgroup of students with disabilities.
