Salary Range: $50,253.60 – $102,664.80

Position Location: Instructional Services, Montgomery or Birmingham, Alabama

The Instructional Services Section of the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) intends to fill one (1) Education Specialist I—English Learners (EL) position.

Duties will include, but will not be limited to the following:

  • Assist in the coordination of ALSDE English Learner (EL) Program components that directly and/or indirectly support EL families, students, and educators.
  • Collaborate with the completion, implementation, and statewide roll out of the Alabama EL Framework.
  • Develop partnerships, internally and externally, and lead innovative projects regarding data collection, analysis, and use and technology to support EL education in K-12 schools.
  • Collect, compile, analyze, and produce data reports in various formats.
  • Analyze state, regional, and LEA data to interpret trends and identify differentiated needs.
  • Make instructional recommendations for EL support based on data from approved ACCESS assessment for English Learners and other state assessments.
  • Design and deliver professional learning in blended formats, face-to-face and technological formats utilizing software programs to increase efficiency in correspondence, communication, and meeting deadlines so that department and division/section goals are met as observed by the supervisor.
  • Complete SDE correspondence, reports, proposals, administrative documents, etc.
  • Research curriculum and instruction pertaining to English Learners in Grades K-12 to develop professional learning modules and other resources.
  • Participate in the development of training and support for EL regional staff.
  • Collaborates with ALSDE partners to conduct professional learning opportunities, deliver educational programs, provide educational resources, and facilitate specialized training to ALSDE, local education agency staff, and other stakeholder groups.
  • Provide technical assistance to EL state and regional staff.

Education:

  • Alabama Professional Educator Certificate
  • Master’s degree in English as a Second Language or English for Speakers of Other Languages.

Experience:

  • Minimum of five years of experience as a successful EL teacher, EL instructional coach and/or highly successful classroom teacher with success in teaching English Learners.
  • School and/or school district leadership experience preferred.

  • Strong motivation, organization, and data management skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple assignments concurrently, use problem-solving skills to generate solutions, and create and deliver effective presentations to professional audiences.
  • Excellent leadership and people/relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to deliver presentations to professional audiences.
  • Team oriented with proven ability to work well with others and flexible.
  • Proficient Microsoft Office knowledge including extensive work with Excel.
  • Fluently speak and communicate in a language other than English preferred.
  • Ability to travel overnight.
