Position Location: Base location-Montgomery or Jefferson County/Travel statewide

The Instructional Services Section of the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) intends to fill two (2) Education Specialist I—AL-MTSS position.

Duties will include, but will not be limited to the following:

  • Work at the direction of Instructional Services/AL-MTSS state staff designated to support the implementation of AL-MTSS and agreed upon plans of support.
  • Provide ongoing coaching to develop, coordinate, and recommend professional learning, technical assistance, coaching, and consultation to LEA staff to evaluate, calibrate, and align initiatives and projects to strategic goals to improve educational outcomes for all students.
  • Provide professional learning, technical assistance, and coaching in assigned region and LEAs for the implementation of AL-MTSS.
  • Participate as an active member of the AL-MTSS advisory team to develop and implement a consistent approach of supporting ALSDE and LEAs in the successful implementation of a multi-tier system of supports decision-making framework.
  • Communicate and model an understanding of teaching and learning framework (standards-based core instruction and universal supports; high-quality, standards aligned instructional materials; assessments to inform learning; proficiency scales; and family support and resources) and its role in equitably improving student achievement, outcomes, and success for all children.
  • Model and provide leadership, professional learning, technical assistance, and coaching for LEA staff to utilize data-driven decision making through a collaborative, team-driven approach to develop, implement, and evaluate, modify, and/or create initiatives, projects, and supports to increase student achievement and success.
  • Assist in collecting, accessing, maintaining, and analyzing relevant data to evaluate AL-MTSS implementation fidelity and efficacy; modify systems, initiatives, and/or projects; and scale implementation of AL-MTSS, systems, initiatives, and projects to inform ongoing planning and provide accountability.
  • Facilitate ongoing communication among state, regional, and local education organizations/agencies to coordinate professional learning, technical assistance, coaching, and/or support for the implementation of data-based decision making, team-driven leadership, and strategic problem solving.
  • Work collaboratively with ALSDE state and regional personnel to support LEAs to engage all stakeholders (e.g., students, educators, families, community members/organizations, etc.) to continuously develop, maintain, and improve the learning environment so that it is nurturing, safe, and supportive and strives to eliminate barriers to student achievement and success.
  • Plan cooperatively in a variety of settings with the ALSDE, Regional Inservice Centers, LEAs, and other stakeholders assuring all agreed upon outcomes, strategies, and timelines are accurate, clear, concise, and complete.
  • Participate in face-to-face and virtual professional learning opportunities as an active learner and contributor as directed by ALSDE/OSL/Instructional Services to reach personal professional growth targets.
  • Communicate verbally, electronically, and in writing with ALSDE State Staff, regional staff, LEA, and school officials/personnel so that information is presented in an accurate, effective, professional, and timely manner to increase optimal achieved goals.
  • Submit, produce, and/or upload required documents, presentations, plans, data, calendar entries, receipts, travel claims, leave requests, and any other work products as directed by Instructional Services. All work products created during tenure of service belong solely to the Alabama Department of Education and must be submitted to ALSDE upon resignation or dismissal and may not be used without prior approval and permission so that evidence of work produced is monitored for effectiveness.
  • Initiate collaborative partnerships with other regional specialists and coaches to build peer and organizational capacity; thus, strengthening day to day work in LEAs and schools across the state.
  • Complete other projects and assignments as directed by the Instructional Services administrator.

Education:

  • Alabama Professional Educator Certificate
  • Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or university in education, teacher leader, instructional leadership, school counseling, or other related education specialty area.

Experience:

  • Five years of professional experience in teaching, education administration, or other instructional support area is required. School- and district-level leadership experience, with a proven record of systemic change related to student learning and achievement, is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of data analysis and reporting to improve student outcomes, results-based decision making, effective use of and disaggregation of data to guide decision making to target specific continuous school improvement goals.
